Bòn bon orchards in the uplands of Da Nang are in harvest and the crop is plentiful this year, Tiền Phong reported on October 25. The fruit grows in the communes of Thạnh Bình, Tiên Phước and Sơn Cẩm Hà, including Lộc Yên hamlet in Thạnh Bình.
Traders buy at the orchard for roughly 15,000 to 40,000 dong a kilo, depending on quality and size. Large, evenly shaped bunches with a bright yellow skin fetch the most. Many growers reportedly earn about 30 to 40 million dong in a season, according to the report.
The paper described one household with 50 trees, 20 of them bearing, and another with more than ten bearing trees. Some trees are about 50 years old.
"Almost every house up here grows bòn bon, to eat, to give as gifts and to sell," grower Nguyễn Đình Nhân told the paper. "This year the harvest is good, so everyone is happy."
Bòn bon, also called "trái nam trân", is a long-established specialty of old Quảng Nam. A folk story holds that Emperor Gia Long named the fruit and added it to the tribute list.
