Da Nang has finished three of the twelve major drainage and flood-control projects it started after the heavy rain of October 14, 2022, with the other nine due by 2027, the city's Department of Construction told a municipal Party Committee meeting on Thursday, October 15, Tuoi Tre News reported.

The finished works are a drainage upgrade around Da Nang International Airport, aimed at flooding around the Thạc Gián–Vĩnh Trung lakes, Nguyễn Văn Linh Street and the Lê Duẩn–Hoàng Hoa Thám junction; the second phase of the Ông Ích Khiêm pumping station, which serves the railway station area; and a pipeline from Phú Lộc canal to Nguyễn Tất Thành Street. The department says they began showing results this year.

Before the 2027 rainy season, priorities include the No. 2 Khe Cạn drainage pipeline, an underground drainage route on Trưng Nữ Vương Street, works around Bàn Thạch and Tam Kỳ, upgrades to the Thuận Phước and Đảo Xanh pumping stations and the Nguyễn Nhân bridge over Phong Bắc canal. A climate-resilient urban development and flood-control project in the south is put at about 7 trillion dong (US$266 million); no budgets are given for the rest.

The department said many older pipes are low and narrow, and that the network copes with about 50 to 60 millimetres of rain an hour in older districts and about 70 in some newer ones. Dredging of inlets, channels and sewers is due to finish this month.

Why it matters

The finished works cover the airport corridor and the railway-station area. By the department's own account, most of the programme is still a year or more away, and rain heavier than the network's limits will still flood streets.
