Primary schools in Ngũ Hành Sơn ward are getting university help to teach more English, according to a University of Danang report published October 19. A working session and signing ceremony to start the intensive program took place on October 15.

The program covers more than 9,300 primary pupils in the ward. The University of Foreign Language Studies, a member of the University of Danang, pledged to provide resources and committed lecturers to guide teaching and build interest in the language. The report does not say how many schools take part, how many hours of lessons are planned or what it costs.

Ward Deputy Chairman Tạ Tự Bình tied the agreement to the city's goal of making English a second language in schools. Rector Nguyễn Văn Long said stressing English from primary level matters, and Lê Lai Primary School principal Phạm Thị Thanh Minh called the university a reliable partner for raising teaching quality.

Why it matters: it links a university language faculty to a whole ward's primary schools. Still unknown: the timetable, who pays and how results will be measured.
