Da Nang traffic police have fined six women a combined 1.5 million dong (250,000 dong each) after they sat in the middle of a hairpin bend on the Hải Vân Pass to take photos, according to Báo Đà Nẵng and Tuoi Tre News on October 18.

Both outlets place the incident at around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, at the bend known as Cùi Chỏ on the ascent in Hải Vân ward. Tuoi Tre News reported that the group had hired a car in Huế, asked the driver to stop and had another tourist photograph them while other vehicles were still passing.

After photos circulated on social media, the Hòa Hiệp traffic police station and Hải Vân ward police verified the incident, and the city Traffic Police Department drew up fine records for sitting in the roadway and obstructing traffic. Báo Đà Nẵng said the women acknowledged what they did. Neither outlet cites the specific legal provision.

Police described the behaviour as extremely dangerous. The pass has steep terrain, tight bends and limited visibility, so drivers coming round a curve may have little time to react. Visitors should take photos from designated stopping points, not from the carriageway.
