Researchers meeting in Hội An on October 22 argued that the old port prospered because it connected inland goods with overseas markets, not simply because of its coastline, Báo Đà Nẵng reported.

The workshop, on Hội An and the Quảng region over 555 years (1471–2026), was organised by Da Nang's culture, sports and tourism department with Hue University's University of Sciences. Speakers said the port drew merchants from Japan, China, Portugal and the Netherlands, mainly in the 16th to 18th centuries, and built on earlier Sa Huỳnh and Champa layers. Historian Lưu Anh Rô noted that highland goods once travelled by river to collection points near Cửa Đại.

Heritage specialist Đặng Văn Bài said that without strong production and transport links to the interior, the port's location alone would not sustain prosperity. Proposals included heritage-based economic corridors, reviving historic rivers and cultural industries; for Da Nang's sea economy, speakers urged regional links and treating ports as part of logistics chains.

Vice Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Anh Thi said the city would consider the proposals in heritage and cultural policy planning.
