Da Nang's Center for Disease Control (CDC) has stepped up monitoring of meningococcal disease, Báo Đà Nẵng reported. The city has recorded one case so far in 2026, in June; it was caught early and the patient recovered.
The report cites national figures of 24 cases and four deaths in the first 14 weeks of 2026, with children under 15 making up 46 percent of cases; the same figures appear in an official dispatch issued in Hải Phòng in May, which also said the cases were scattered rather than a single outbreak. It also mentions a cluster at a secondary school in Ho Chi Minh City this month, with one death and three patients still being treated.
Under Ministry of Health guidance, CDC Da Nang says it has set up round-the-clock reporting from communities, clinics and hospitals, stronger surveillance in kindergartens, schools and crowded places, stocks of disinfectant and rapid-response teams. Health staff are being trained to tell the disease apart from seasonal flu and dengue.
Đặng Quang Ánh, deputy head of the CDC's infectious disease department, said early symptoms resemble a cold, but fever often does not respond to ordinary fever medicine, and the illness can progress within 12 to 24 hours to a stiff neck, drowsiness or a purple rash. Higher-risk groups are children from two months to five years, people aged 15 to 25, and people with chronic conditions. CDC director Nguyễn Đại Vĩnh said vaccination is the foundation, with hygiene needed to break transmission. The advice includes hand-washing, covering coughs, ventilating rooms and seeking care at once for suspicious symptoms.
Why it matters: The local risk described is low, but the symptoms move quickly. Parents and school staff in particular should know the warning signs.
