The Thọ Quang fishing port, described by Tuổi Trẻ as the largest in central Vietnam, is to change function under Da Nang's approved general master plan to 2050, with a vision to 2075, the paper reported on October 22.
The decision, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Gia Túc, directs the conversion of the port to support urban development, tourism and better technical and social infrastructure around it. A larger fishing hub is proposed in the south, linked to the Hoàng Sa fishing grounds, with fishing logistics services.
The plan also lists areas to study for land reclamation: about 450 hectares at the Liên Chiểu port area, about 1,500 hectares in Đà Nẵng Bay, about 100 hectares south of the Sơn Trà peninsula, and other possible sites in the south. Priority projects include urban and high-speed rail, the Liên Chiểu port, free trade zone infrastructure, flood-control and drainage works, waste treatment, and an international financial centre.
Tuổi Trẻ gives no timetable for the port conversion or the reclamation studies, and does not say what would happen to the boats and fishing families based at Thọ Quang.
