Heavy rain is forecast for central Vietnam from 8 to 12 November, with some areas from Quang Tri to Da Nang possibly receiving more than 500mm in total, VTV reports, citing the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
For Quang Tri to Da Nang, and the eastern parts of provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected from the night of 4 November through the 8th. From 8 to 12 November there will be heavy to very heavy rain in places. The report calls this the focus area and says intense rainfall may occur on 9 to 11 November.
Further north, from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh, showers are expected around 5 to 7 November, followed by rain from 8 to 12 November, with local heavy to very heavy falls and less rain in the north from 11 November.
The forecasters warn that thunderstorms in the affected areas may bring tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts, which can damage crops, trees, homes and transport infrastructure. Heavy local rain may cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes and flooding in low-lying areas. Nguyen Van Huong, head of the weather forecasting department, said the areas need to guard against tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts during storms.
Residents can follow real-time warnings on the hydrometeorological service's radar and flash-flood pages, and on its flash flood and landslide bulletins.
The longer-range outlook is for less rain than normal. Nguyen Duc Hoa, deputy head of climate forecasting, said November rainfall in most areas outside the north, Thanh Hoa-Ha Tinh and the south should be 20% to 40% below the multi-year average.
For December, south-central coastal areas are expected to be 50 to 100mm below average. Rainfall in many central areas may remain below average even in the main rainy months.
