Da Nang came late to craft beer. When Vietcetera profiled 7 Bridges in 2018, it called the city "late on the craft craze" and the brewery its first craft brewer, while the scene was "centered around Hanoi and Saigon". Eight years later the city has a production brewery of its own, two Saigon-born brands with taprooms here, and plenty of bars pouring local drafts. Here's where to drink them.
A short history
The first: 7 Bridges. 7 Bridges Brewing was founded in Da Nang around 2017 by Stanley Boots, an American who discovered craft beer at law school in Oregon. Boots called it "an impact brewing company", pairing beer with social and environmental causes. One early beer was a Vietnam Red Ale, balancing European malts with American hops, and it got bolder after brewer Darren Provenzano arrived. He told Vietcetera the brewery went from six hop varieties to 24.
The company is still headquartered in Ngũ Hành Sơn, Da Nang, according to its website. But its taprooms are now in Hanoi, Hoi An, Ninh Bình, Bình Dương and two in Saigon, and the site lists none in Da Nang. For a 7 Bridges pint on tap, the nearest is the Hoi An taproom at 36 Trần Phú in the Old Town, open 10 a.m.–10 p.m.
The big one: 5 Elements. On May 27, 2023, 5 Elements Brewing Co. (Công ty TNHH Bia Ngũ Hành) opened a brewery in the Liên Chiểu industrial park, Sài Gòn Giải Phóng reported. The company calls it the largest craft brewery in Southeast Asia, which is its own claim. Its brewmaster is Gary Bett, whom the company credits with more than 40 years of brewing.
The Saigon arrival: East West. East West Brewing opened its beachfront taproom in 2023. Its full story is in our history of East West Brewing.
BREWHAHA: three taprooms for a Da Nang-brewed beer
BREWHAHA is 5 Elements' own taproom chain. Its beers are named for the five elements of Vietnamese and Chinese cosmology, and the brewery's site describes each with a local ingredient:
- 5E Kim: light, with a finish of mắc mật, a citrusy mountain leaf.
- 5E Mộc: bitter and deep, with passion fruit and citrus peel.
- 5E Thủy: low-carb.
- 5E Hỏa: pepper and chili warmth and roasted hạt dổi seeds.
- 5E Thổ: brewed with shiitake mushroom extract and four kinds of barley.
Newer ranges include 5E Hoppiness and the canned 5E Chú Tễu. Food is Vietnamese-led, overseen by a chef the company calls Cô Hoa. The three taprooms, according to BREWHAHA's site:
- BREWHAHA Central: 16 Thái Phiên, Hải Châu. 10 a.m.–midnight. 0911 340 989.
- BREWHAHA Riverside: 96–98 Thăng Long, Hải Châu. 4 p.m.–midnight. 0905 916 555.
- BREWHAHA Seaside: Lô 36 Hoàng Kế Viêm, Ngũ Hành Sơn. 4 p.m.–1 a.m. 0763 537 676.
Central is the daytime option. Seaside is near the beach in the An Thượng area.
East West: two Da Nang taprooms
- Beachfront: 1A Võ Nguyên Giáp, Phước Mỹ, Sơn Trà. Open 8 a.m.–1 a.m. daily, with a seafood-heavy kitchen.
- City centre: ground floor of a Wink hotel. 11 a.m.–midnight Sunday to Wednesday, 11 a.m.–1 a.m. Thursday to Saturday.
The company's taproom page says each site pours some beers available only there. It also lists recurring events: Happy Hours, a Beer of the Month and a "Kegs n' Eggs" weekend brunch. The flagships are an IPA, a pale ale, a pilsner, a hefeweizen ("Summer") and the berry wheat ale East West Rosé.
Bars with local drafts
You don't need a brewery taproom to drink Vietnamese craft beer here. Two places publish their beer offer:
- Gordon's New York Pizza Beachside, 57 An Thượng 2, says it keeps four local beers on draft and more than 60 imported and domestic beers in bottles and cans (Gordon's). It's open 11 a.m.–1 a.m. See our pizza guide.
- Bikini Bottom Express lists a "Bikini brewed beer" and runs a daily 5–7 p.m. buy-two-get-one happy hour at its diners. See our profile of Bikini Bottom.
East West also sells cans and bottles in supermarkets and convenience stores; it says its beer is in more than 1,000 outlets nationwide.
Neighborhoods for a beer crawl
- An Thượng and Mỹ An: the densest cluster, and walkable. BREWHAHA Seaside, Gordon's Beachside and Bikini Bottom are all within a few blocks of the beach.
- The northern beachfront: East West's big taproom stands on its own at the Phước Mỹ end of Võ Nguyên Giáp. Go at sunset.
- Hải Châu: BREWHAHA Central and Riverside, near the Han River and the night markets.
Styles you'll meet
Most Da Nang taps lean approachable: pilsners, pale ales, wheat beers and fruit-forward ales built for the heat. The distinctly local beers are the ones using Vietnamese ingredients:
- East West's seasonal mulberries, kumquat, guava and coffee;
- 5 Elements' mắc mật, hạt dổi and shiitake;
- 7 Bridges' "Vietnam Red Ale".
If you want hops, ask for the IPA and the tap list of the day.
Taprooms change their lists and hours often, and the events calendar tracks what's on this week. See our What's On calendar and the venue guide.
