Hiệp Đức commune in southern Da Nang said on October 27 it is giving each of its nine villages a cow to host a "Great Solidarity" community meal, Dân trí reports. Each cow is worth 10 million dong, 90 million in total, all from donations by organisations and individuals in the commune.

The meals mark the 96th anniversary of the Vietnam Fatherland Front's traditional day on November 18 and tie in with Vietnamese Culture Day on November 24. Commune Party Secretary Lê Quang Quỳnh said the aim is to thank residents for a year of work and to build community bonds. Last year the commune gave each village 2 million dong for its festival.

Each village plans more than 10 trays of food, depending on its size, and may add dishes. Beef was chosen over pork or chicken so villages can feed large crowds. Villages also plan arts performances, sports, folk games and gifts for disadvantaged households.
