Britain's Home Office has published its 2026 Global Universities List for the High Potential Individual visa, and no university in Vietnam or any other ASEAN country except Singapore is on it, Thanh Nien reports. The list was posted on the UK government portal on 4 November.
It names 82 universities and applies to degrees awarded between 1 November 2026 and 31 October 2027. The United States has 34 of them, mainland China eight, Australia six and Hong Kong five. Singapore has two, Japan two, South Korea three and Canada three, and Europe has 19.
The visa, introduced on 30 May 2022, lets graduates of listed universities live and work, or look for work, in the UK without a job offer or an employer sponsor. Bachelor's and master's graduates receive two years and doctoral graduates three.
No more than 8,000 applications are considered a year, and the visa does not lead to permanent settlement. Applicants must still meet English-language, financial and other immigration requirements.
To qualify, a university must rank in the top 100 of at least two of three international tables: Times Higher Education, QS and the Shanghai ARWU ranking. The home secretary can also exclude institutions on national-security or foreign-policy grounds.
Thanh Nien notes that experts have criticised using rankings to judge a graduate's potential, since research-heavy tables can overlook strong graduates from other institutions.
