Heavy rain is forecast across central Vietnam from the night of 8 November to 11 November, with Da Nang among the areas expected to see the largest totals, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as reported by VnExpress.

The centre links the rain to cold air and expects two phases. From the night of 8 to the night of 9 November, southern Nghe An to northern Quang Tri should get 100-200 mm, locally above 300 mm.

From 9 to the night of 11 November, the heaviest rain is expected in Hue, Da Nang and eastern Quang Ngai, typically 250-450 mm and locally above 700 mm. Southern Quang Tri and eastern areas from Gia Lai to Dak Lak could see 150-300 mm, with some spots over 400 mm.

The agency warns of intense bursts above 100 mm in three hours. It cites risks of flooding in low-lying areas, urban districts and industrial zones, flash floods on small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes.

The National Civil Defence Steering Committee has asked localities to follow forecasts closely and pass warnings to residents. It also asked them to review and evacuate people from areas at risk of deep flooding, flash floods and landslides, and to manage hydropower and irrigation reservoirs safely, with particular checks on small and vulnerable ones.

Forecasts can change, so residents should follow updates from the national forecasting centre and city authorities.

Elsewhere, cold air is also bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to northern Vietnam on the evening and night of 6 November, typically 10-30 mm and locally above 70 mm. The forecasters advise people there to watch for tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts.
