Several Da Nang wards have moved to collecting household rubbish at set times instead of leaving it on pavements all day, Báo và Phát thanh, Truyền hình Đà Nẵng reports. The aim is to cut uncollected waste and keep streets tidy. Hải Châu, Hòa Cường, Thanh Khê and An Hải are among the areas named.
In Hải Châu, the ward's environmental team branch starts collecting around 4 p.m. and finishes between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., depending on the route. Residents are asked to bring rubbish out when the truck arrives. Residential group heads receive the ward's list and divide it into a time slot for each street.
An Hải, which has hundreds of accommodation businesses and restaurants and many tenants and shift workers, collects daily with a separate time window for each street or neighbourhood. Residential group boards must pass the schedule to every household. If a household misses collection, the group leader is to find out why and report it or persuade the household to comply.
Narrow alleys are a problem for the tricycle collection carts. Teams assign vehicles to suit each area's time window, ring a bell and wait for residents, or go door to door.
A Hải Châu resident, Nguyễn Thị Lan, said her family listens for the bell. Planning around the truck's arrival means the bags no longer sit outside "for hours", she said. Dương Thành Nhân, who heads Residential Group 36 in Hải Châu, said the early weeks were harder for factory workers, people with second jobs and shops that close in the evening, while office workers adjusted easily.
The paper says the system has reduced informal dumping points and cut the number of trips collection workers make.
