Two junior secondary schools in Hội An are to start teaching Japanese as a second foreign language, Việt Nam News reported on 30 October. The programme is run by the Việt Nam–Japan Friendship Association of Da Nang with the Consulate General of Japan in Da Nang.
Association chair Trần Văn Nam said classes will begin soon at the two schools. Two high-school classes are also planned, but they must wait until more students enrol in Japanese. He said the start was delayed earlier by the merger of the former Quảng Nam Province with Da Nang.
The report says Hội An's Culture and Sports Centre has already begun a Japanese language and culture project for primary pupils with the Tokyo Shirubakai Art Troupe. Earlier this year, Da Nang's education department and the Japanese Consulate General opened two Japanese classes at Nguyễn Lương Bằng junior high school.
