Japanese is due to be taught as a second foreign language at two junior secondary schools in Hoi An, Viet Nam News reported on 30 October. The programme is run by the Viet Nam-Japan Friendship Association of Da Nang City together with the Consulate General of Japan in Da Nang.

Association chairman Tran Van Nam said it will start "in the near future", without giving a date. The paper reports that the schedule was delayed by the merger of Quang Nam Province with Da Nang City. Two high school classes have also been assigned, but they will go ahead only once enough students sign up.

Viet Nam News puts the programme in the context of existing ties. It says at least 5,000 students at 25 primary and junior secondary schools in Lien Chieu Ward have studied Japanese, though lessons there were suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Da Nang has 30 Japanese language training centres, it adds.

The report also notes that Da Nang and Mitsuke City in Niigata Prefecture have run a homestay exchange every year since 2005, and that the two cities have held a Viet Nam-Japan cultural festival annually since 2012. The two schools have not been named.
