Vietnam imported 193,220 cars in the first nine months of 2026, up nearly 25% from a year earlier, according to preliminary customs data reported by VnExpress on 3 November. Cars with nine seats or fewer accounted for 134,504 units, up 14.9%, and transport vehicles for 34,645 units, up 73.3%.
Indonesia, Thailand and China together supplied 182,545 units, about 94% of the total. Indonesia is the largest source with 80,620 units, up 35.7%, and the report links the rise partly to Japanese carmakers moving production from Thailand to Indonesia. China has overtaken Thailand for second place, with imports up 48%.
The average value per imported unit was about US$14,400 from Indonesia, US$20,800 from Thailand and US$34,800 from China.
Spending on imported assembled cars was about US$4.46 billion, up nearly 31%, and on parts and components US$5.66 billion, up 37.6%. Together that is US$10.13 billion, up 34.5%.
Locally assembled car sales are nearly double imported sales, the report says. The figures cover nine months, not ten.
