The Ministry of Construction has proposed investing in equipment to detect and suppress drones that enter no-fly zones around airports, VTV reported on 4 November. The ministry made the proposal in a letter to the Ministry of Public Security reviewing how aviation security law has been enforced.

The ministry says unmanned aircraft activity near airports has become complicated. Flying a drone illegally, or ignoring no-fly and restricted zones, can bring it into the airspace used by aircraft and threaten safety during take-off and landing.

Handling cases involves many agencies and has sometimes taken a long time, and the equipment for detecting and dealing with drones does not yet meet real needs. Flying kites, sound kites and sky lanterns near airports also continues.

The ministry recommends that local police work with other agencies to investigate and penalise violations, that rules on coordinating the handling of drones be reviewed, and that each airport draw up its own rules and procedures to suit its geography and local forces.

It also asks local authorities to step up education on the rules on managing drones and on aviation security, including regular sessions in schools and neighbourhoods around airports. The report describes proposals only; none has been adopted.
