The coastal road between Hoi An and Chu Lai airport has no petrol station along a stretch of about 75 to 80 kilometres, Tuổi Trẻ reports. The stretch is Route 129 (Vo Chi Cong), from the Cua Dai bridge to Chu Lai airport, where traffic is rising. The paper says the gap is an inconvenience for drivers, who have to plan their fuel and look for stations elsewhere.
The report does not give one definite reason. Nguyen Ngoc Hung, director of Petrolimex's Quang Nam branch, says finding suitable land still faces "some obstacles".
Le Van Sinh, a former Quang Nam transport director, says a company once proposed a rest stop in the former Binh Minh commune but the project did not go ahead. He adds that sites previously had to fit a local fuel retail network plan, a requirement since dropped for the retail eligibility certificate.
Petrolimex is studying sites and working with local authorities on procedures, and says it wants to build "as soon as possible". No date is given. Mr Sinh says undeveloped land, including commercial-service land, remains along the route and could host stations and rest stops.
Da Nang also plans a high-speed link from the city centre to Chu Lai, about 46.9 kilometres of new road plus about 41.8 kilometres along the existing Route 129. The report says rest stops and essential services will be planned along with that road, but it gives no construction timeline.
For now, drivers heading south from Hoi An along the coast should fill up before they set out.
