Cua Dai beach, about 5 kilometres east of Hoi An Ancient Town, is recovering after more than VND1.196 trillion (US$46 million) of coastal protection work, Tuoi Tre reports.

Severe erosion began in 2014. Sand disappeared, coconut trees were washed away and tourism buildings along the shore were badly damaged. Tuoi Tre notes the beach was once ranked among Asia's 25 most beautiful.

What was built

The larger project, completed in March 2025, cost VND982 billion (US$38 million) and was funded by loans from the French Development Agency plus domestic counterpart money. It covers about 3.4 km of coast, from the river mouth near the Cham Islands ferry terminal north to the Victoria Hotel area.

The works include seven offshore breakwaters totalling more than 2 km, placed 250 to 300 metres from shore, and six groynes totalling nearly 1.5 km. Six-tonne concrete armour blocks were used, along with large-scale sand replenishment that produced a dry beach about 40 metres wide and a swimming area about 60 metres wide.

A second phase

In April 2026 Da Nang launched a further project worth more than VND498 billion (US$19.3 million). More than VND214 billion (US$8.3 million) of that is for beaches at Cua Dai, Tan Thanh and An Bang.

Nguyen Ngoc Tan, deputy head of the Da Nang transport and agricultural project management board, told Tuoi Tre that both projects are substantially completed and are going through final acceptance and handover.

Business is returning

Tuoi Tre reports that businesses along the shore have reopened. It is currently the low tourism season, so the real test of the new beach will come when visitors return in numbers.
