A Da Nang delegation in Sydney this week discussed a possible direct flight to Western Sydney International Airport, along with wireless and drone technology, Báo Đà Nẵng reports. The route is still at the preparation stage: no airline and no start date have been named.
The delegation was led by Ngô Xuân Thắng, deputy secretary of the city Party Committee, with city vice chairman Hồ Quang Bửu. A separate working group led by Vũ Quang Hùng, head of the Da Nang Hi-Tech Park and Industrial Zones Management Board, handled the technology talks.
On the flight, both sides agreed to name liaison contacts, share data on passenger mix, seasonality and airline capacity, and study a seasonal trial or a suitable first frequency. The paper says Western Sydney airport opened to commercial flights on 25 October 2026 and operates around the clock. It also reports 376,981 Australian arrivals in Da Nang in the first nine months of 2026, up 43.86% on a year earlier.
At the University of Sydney, the group met researchers working on long-range Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi sensing. Da Nang is interested in using the long-range equipment on Sơn Trà peninsula and in the western mountain communes for forest protection and search and rescue, and has said it will study a pilot in Sơn Trà and Hòa Vang district.
At Macquarie University, the group visited a drone research centre working on multi-drone coordination and in-air battery swapping. Hùng proposed uses such as forest monitoring and early fire detection, and floated a joint research base in the Hi-Tech Park. Macquarie researchers said technical standards and the legal framework must come first, and the paper reports that Professor Richard Han agreed only to discuss the idea with business partners.
Nothing was signed. The city's stated aim is to turn the early talks into projects with named partners and timelines.
