A strong cold air mass will reach northern and north-central Vietnam from the evening of 8 November, bringing the first widespread cold spell of the 2026-27 winter, the national hydro-meteorological centre forecast, as VietNamNet reported on 6 November.
What to expect on land
Northern mountain areas turn cold from the night of 8 November, and other parts of the north and north-central region from 9 November. Minimum temperatures are forecast at 16-19 degrees Celsius across the north and north-central coast, with some high mountain areas below 13 degrees.
In Hanoi, rain and showers are expected from the evening of 8 November to the morning of 9 November, with thunderstorms and locally heavy rain in places. From 9 November the daytime high falls to about 22-23 degrees, roughly 10 degrees lower than the day before, with lows of 16-19 degrees. Days turn sunny from 10 November, but nights stay cold, with lows near 16 degrees.
Rough seas
Strong northeasterly winds are forecast over the Gulf of Tonkin from the night of 8 November, force 7 and sometimes 8 with gusts of 9-10, with waves of 2-4 metres. The northern South China Sea, including the Hoang Sa (Paracel) area, will see similar winds and waves of 4-6 metres.
From 9 November, winds of force 6-7, gusting to 8-9, with waves of 3-5 metres are forecast off the coast from southern Quang Tri to Quang Ngai, which includes the sea off Da Nang. Small boats and coastal travel should check conditions.
The same cold air is expected to bring heavy rain to central Vietnam. Hue, Da Nang and eastern Quang Ngai are forecast 250-450 mm from 9 to 11 November, as we reported earlier.
