Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai is expected to open to commercial flights at midnight on 24 December, VnExpress International reports, citing the state news agency VNA. The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) set the date in a notice to the Dong Nai People's Committee.

The first schedule allows up to 366 flights a week, of which 322 are domestic and 44 international. Domestic carriers will move in by stages.

Vietnam Airlines is expected to fly Long Thanh to Hanoi and on several international routes, while Vietjet plans domestic services to major economic and tourism hubs. ACV said many foreign airlines have expressed interest in the airport.

Management agencies, airport operators and airlines are still drafting flight allocations, taking slot coordination with Tan Son Nhat International Airport into account. The report does not list the destinations.

The airport covers 5,000 hectares about 40 km from Ho Chi Minh City and is Vietnam's largest by area. The first phase is designed for 25 million passengers a year, rising to 100 million once the project is complete.
