A survey using automatic camera traps has recorded a preliminary 607 animal species in the Mỹ Sơn historical and cultural relic protection area, the Da Nang Special-Use Forest Management Board announced on October 28, Tiền Phong reported. The area is in Thu Bồn commune and covers more than 1,160 hectares, over 1,000 of them special-use forest.

The board set 30 cameras at 15 points in the forest. The tally includes 37 mammal species, 62 birds, 97 reptiles, 43 fish, 109 insects and 189 bottom-dwelling animals, according to the paper.

The animals photographed or listed include the Javan pangolin, civet, wild boar, porcupine, monkeys and pythons, along with several forest bird species. A camera-trap photo of a pheasant, identified in a caption as a crested argus-type bird, accompanies the report.

The survey also counted 238 plant species, among them 36 timber trees and 157 medicinal plants. Most of the rest are fruit or ornamental species.

Tiền Phong says full statistics on population sizes and densities are not yet available, so the results are preliminary. The forest is described as tropical monsoon forest typical of central Vietnam.
