A man in southern Vietnam won a prize on every one of the 160 tickets in a lottery stack he bought, collecting winnings worth VND39.2 billion (about US$1.52 million) before tax, VnExpress International reported on October 27.
To Ich Tuyen, who owns the Ngoc Quang lottery agency in Ca Mau, confirmed on October 26 that the agency sold the stack and paid out the prizes, according to VnExpress, which cited local media.
Tuyen said the stack held 16 tickets carrying 361620, the special-prize number drawn by the Hau Giang Lottery Company, plus 144 tickets that each won a VND50 million consolation prize, VnExpress said, citing Tien Phong. In the southern lottery, a ticket matching the special-prize number pays VND2 billion, while one that differs only in the first of its six digits wins VND50 million.
At VND10,000 a ticket, the whole stack cost VND1.6 million. After 10% tax, Tuyen said, the winner took home about VND35.6 billion.
The buyer has not been named. Thanh Nien reported that he regularly buys whole stacks at the agency, and at his request VND2.6 billion (about US$100,700) was paid in cash and the rest by bank transfer.
Tuyen said the agency had sold winning tickets many times, but customers usually won on only a few each, and this was the first time he had seen a customer win so much.
The man ordered the stack online, paid in full and asked the agency to hold the tickets because he was busy. The agency called him on the afternoon of October 24, after the results came out, to tell him he had won.
