Vietnam's aviation authority submitted a plan to the Ministry of Construction this week for a major upgrade of Na San Airport in Son La Province, including a longer runway, with a preliminary cost of VND5.26 trillion for the first phase. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam asked for appraisal and approval, VnExpress reported on 5 November.
Under the plan, a 3,000-metre by 45-metre runway would replace the existing 2,396-metre runway by 2030. The airport would be designed for Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, with capacity for one million passengers and 2,500 tonnes of cargo a year, Viet Nam News reported.
Key numbers
- Capacity: one million passengers a year by 2030, rising to 1.8 million and 4,500 tonnes of cargo by 2050.
- Aircraft stands: four for medium-sized aircraft initially, increasing to six by 2050.
- Land: about 544 hectares in total, up from the current 149 hectares.
- Cost: VND5.26 trillion preliminary investment to 2030, including about VND1.55 trillion for land clearance, VND2.02 trillion for construction and VND781 billion for equipment.
The airport lies in Chieng Mung and Mai Son communes and would remain a shared civil and military airport. The authority has asked Son La's People's Committee to include the plan in local land-use and transport-link planning.
The plan is still at the appraisal stage, and no start date for construction has been announced.
