Da Nang is dredging the mouth of the Phú Lộc River and ordering drains and ditches cleared before the rest of the storm season, Báo Đà Nẵng reported on October 26. The river is the main stormwater channel for a large basin covering Hòa Khánh, Thanh Khê and An Khê wards and part of the airport area in Hòa Cường.

According to the report, the city chairman approved dredging in mid-September because sand was cutting flood flow at the river mouth. In mid-October the Department of Construction told the Da Nang Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company to start at once. The paper puts the sand at about 920 cubic metres upstream of Phú Lộc Bridge, 1,055 under it and 2,813 downstream.

Company director Hà Văn Thành told the paper the crew is using the good weather to concentrate on the work.

In Hòa Khánh, ward chairman Huỳnh Anh Vũ said the ward will dredge and widen ditches to cope with small and medium rains. The interim cost is about 20 billion dong, and the city wants the ditch line finished in November.

The Department of Construction has also told the drainage company and local authorities to clear drain inlets, collection ditches, manholes and main sewers in urban areas by the end of October. When a storm, tropical depression or widespread heavy rain is forecast, lakes must be drawn down to their lowest design level. Residents are asked to clear objects blocking street inlets and silted ditches in front of their homes.

Lake works are at different stages. Department of Construction Deputy Director Võ Tấn Hà said dredging of Đò Xu lake should begin in 2026, and preparations continue for Bàu Tràm and Hòa Phú lakes. Separately, a flood project of about 7,000 billion dong covers dredging the Trường Giang River and clearing the Bàn Thạch River, to open drainage corridors for Tam Kỳ, Hội An and nearby areas.

Why it matters: Residents of the low-lying western districts are asked to keep their own drain covers clear while the work is finished.
